Thunder Moon, Full Buck Moon, Hay Moon, and Blessing Moon are among the names given to July’s Capricorn Full Moon. July marks the month when thunderstorms boom and rage in many parts of North America, bucks grow new antlers, and farmers cut and store hay. The July moon affords a first look at a 2014 Full Moon, Super Moon, so designated when the Full Moon and Earth are less than 224,851 miles (361,863 kilometers) apart. As a result, the moon, tides, and emotions will be larger than normal.

Moon Magic for Staying Grounded

To best manifest magic under a Capricorn Full Moon/Super Moon, examine the energies associated with the sign Capricorn. Think of a goat (the symbol for Capricorn) steadily climbing a hill. It has a short-term goal — reach the summit. Magic works best if you set a clear intention. What is your goal?

The energy of Capricorn, magnified by the Super Moon, will help you organize your thoughts, complete projects or relationships, and move toward your goal. Because of the high potential for emotional drama, this is a good month to perform magic for staying grounded and in your power. To protect yourself from being knocked off course, utilize any of the following leading up to the Full Moon/Super Moon:

Stone Magic

• Wear or carry hematite (but avoid placing hematite near any inflammation, as it may cause the condition to worsen). Hematite aids in healing/balancing the root chakra. To discharge any negative energy the stone may acquire, place it among tumbled rock crystals. Do not discharge it in water.
• Wear or carry tourmaline quartz. Tourmaline is linked to Capricorn, and is known for its harmonizing powers. The stone promotes tranquility, allowing you to focus and remain in your power.

Candle Magic

Be sure to complete any candle spells before the moon enters void of course — a bad time to do magic — at 9:56 am EDT on July 12.

• If your intent is to be well grounded: coat a brown candle with olive oil sprinkled with fir or spruce (either minced or ground leaves from the tree, or essential oil).
• If you desire to become more organized: coat a deep blue candle with horehound or caraway added to olive oil.
• If you need help with decision-making, balance, and handling problems, coat a teal candle with crushed bergamot, rosemary, or mustard seeds mixed with olive oil. (Add chicory for removing obstacles.)
• White can be used as a substitute for any color, but concentrate on the proper color while performing the spell.
• From the time you prepare the plants (harvesting, crushing, mixing with the oil) until you light the candle, concentrate on the outcome you’d like to achieve. The entire process becomes a moving meditation that focuses your intention and boosts the magic. Envision the flame from the candle as giving spark to your intention, and the smoke carrying your wish to the universe.
